This model is part of an on-going investigation into the possibilities of creating three-dimensional objects from two-dimensional images.
The chair was created by drawing a very simple pencil-line image of a profile of a chair. The drawing was then scanned and transferred to a 3D modelling program where the variations in density of the pencil line are reinterpreted as peaks and troughs of a virtual landscape.
Once the computer model has been generated it is then possible to produce a solid three-dimensional model using a rapid manufacturing process. This allows the model to be built directly from the computer file as a form of three-dimensional printout.
